Obey on stimulus waste: "So what?" - The Hill

One would think that some Republican would accuse the Democrats of doing this, rather than one of their leaders admitting to it:

"So what?" Obey asked in response to a question on NPR's "Morning Edition" about
the perceived lack of direction from Congress as to how money in the stimulus
should be spent. "This is an emergency. We've got to simply find a way to get
this done as fast as possible and as well as possible, and that's what we're
doing."

The Hill quotes David Obey, the chief author of the stimulus package.

Congressional Democrats are going to spend close to $1 trillion and they don't care how it is spent? Isn't this gross negligence per se?

Lest anyone doubt it, the Democrats aren't responsible if the money is badly spent. The Hill indicates that Obey also said that "Congress is not responsible if money is misspent, but rather, whoever spends the money poorly."

So don't blame Obey or Pelosi or Obama if money goes down some rat hole and doesn't help anyone. It's not their fault. They just appropriated the money in the emergency. It's those awful people who got the money and spent it.

You just can't make this stuff up. Any novelist who tried would be panned by critics for writing things that was just too unbelievable.
