The House "Stimulus Package" has a "buy American" requirement in it. Senator John McCain proposed an amendment that would remove that requirement. His amendment lost on a 31-65 vote in which Senator Lieberman joined 30 Republicans in opposing a new form of Smoot-Hawley protectionism.
Do the Democrats want to generate a new trade war? Do they not understand that Smoot-Hawley contributed to the Great Depression? It seems that Obama and the Democrats want to enact some of the policies that turned a recession into the Great Depression.
Buy American and union-only contracts reprise two of the policy disasters of the 1930s.
At least 31 Senators had the courage to stand up against protectionism.
