Democrats: Cut defense spending but increase the pork.

Fox reports that Team Obama is demanding that defense spending be cut by 10%, approximately $55 billion.

This comes at a time when Democrats in the House of Representatives passed a pork laden spending bill that can be defended only by arguing that any government expenditure is good in a stimulus package.

Thus, according to the Democrats, any government expenditure is a good one except one to defend the country. Undoubtedly, some fat can be cut in the Defense budget as in any government budget.

The Defense budget provides very real jobs for very real people in this country. Reducing the budget will mean job cuts in good paying industry at a time that many companies are laying people off.

The Wall Street Journal describes some of the spending in the House stimulus package: "There's $1 billion for Amtrak, the federal railroad that hasn't turned a profit in 40 years; $2 billion for child-care subsidies; $50 million for that great engine of job creation, the National Endowment for the Arts; $400 million for global-warming research and another $2.4 billion for carbon-capture demonstration projects. There's even $650 million on top of the billions already doled out to pay for digital TV conversion coupons."

Do the House Democrats seriously contend that these expenditures will provide stimulus to the economy that $55 billion in defense spending will not? We are in two very real wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Very real questions continue as to the reality of man made global warming. Yet the Democrats want to cut defense spending as they appropriate almost $3 billion for global warming projects.

It appears that the Democrats are more intent on using the financial crisis as an excuse to push their usual agendas rather than providing serious policy proposals that deal with the crisis.
