Mitt Romney hits a home run in his commentary to CNN. He summarizes the Obama stimulus package: "the Obama spending bill would stimulate the government, not the economy." He should be president of the United States rather than either Obama or McCain.

He makes the critically important point that "there are two ways you can put money into the economy, by spending more or by taxing less. But if it's stimulus you want, taxing less works best. That's why permanent tax cuts should be the centerpiece of the economic stimulus."

Obama expresses the basic error in the Democratic approach when he argues that complaints the package was a spending bill rather than a stimulus bill were off base. "What do you think a stimulus bill is?" he said. "That's the point."

No, Mr. President, that is not the point. Committing to expenditures 3 or 4 years out does not stimulate the economy now. The test of any expenditures should be whether they fund the "real needs of government that will have immediate impact." Romney contends that we should repair and replace military equipment damaged or destroyed in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan.
