"They must renounce violence, recognize Israel, and
abide by previous commitments, she said of Hamas, "otherwise, I don't think it
will result in the kind of positive step forward either for the Palestinian
people or as a vehicle for a reinvigorated effort to obtain peace that leads to
a Palestinian state."
The Post provides Hamas' response: "Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan reportedly said that the group will not recognize Israel nor comply with the conditions set by the Quartet."
The world demands that Israel negotiate and recognize people who refuse to accept the continued existence of Israel. The people received Gaza and used it as a launching pad for rockets aimed at civilians in southern Israel. Rather than using the opportunity to develop industry to support the people of Gaza, resources were used to buy rockets and other weapons.
Clinton is absolutely correct. Until Hamas and other Arab leaders recognize Israel, continued efforts to bring about peace are hopeless. All that can occur is a temporary truce for Hamas to rebuild its armaments for more attacks on Israel.
